In the tropical forests from Liberia, the trees are receiving electronic labels: we are talking about a technology put into practice with the purpose of relaunching the legal trade with wood. These labels are more like the bar codes stick on the products from the supermarket; they have to allow to pursuit the wood, its sawing until its boarding in the port.
A representative of Swiss society SGS, that is in charge with the management of forests from Liberia said that “Liberia is the first country in the world where this level of traceability has been reached”. They set the control in the forests, making sure that only the trees that need to be cut are cut, then they are following the route of the wood until it is put into the boat. In 2006, ONU has raised the embargo over the Liberian wood, keeping in mind the efforts of the Government regarding the resumption of the control over the forests.
The relaunching of the wood industry is very important for the reconstruction of this country from West Africa, which is classified between the most poor in the world.
The societies that have obtained the authorization of exploitation were very carefully selected.
“Until now, we have signed seven contracts with foreigners societies for the management of 50 000 until 400 000 hectares”, explains the general manager of Forestry’s development Authority.
