On 22nd of February 2010, France has ratified, by the last vote of the Senate, the international agreement from 2006, regarding the tropical wood’s protection. 15 millions of hectares by year are affected by their disappearance. The senators have ratified, unanimously, this document, which the deputies had already approved.
59 states are involved in the commerce with tropical wood (from those, 33 countries are producers and 26 are consumers) and France is the 26th state, which has ratified this agreement in 2006, at Geneva. This agreement is renewing the International Agreement about tropical wood, AIBT, from 1994, which expired in December 2006.
The agreement has the purpose of starting the optional mechanisms in order to promote a sustainable exploitation of tropical forests. This thing involves the application of a label that assures the consumers that the wood they buy comes from the forests that are exploited in a sustainable manner.
