According to a report issued Thursday by European officials, the European Union (EU) could offer 2.5 billion euro to poor countries in order to help them protect the tropical forests.
This subject will also be debated at the conference in Copenhagen. There will be talk of signing a new agreement regarding energetic efficiency and fighting climate changes, after the end of the Kyoto agreement, after 2012.
“The emission reduction by stopping afforestations and diminishing forest degradation represent a special challenge. If 5 % of the incomes obtained from selling emission certificates would be used as contributions to the global effort of fighting afforestations, approximately 1.5 – 2.5 billions could be raised by 2020”, states the report. It also underlines that undeveloped countries need substantial funding in order to reduce the CO2 emissions and to adapt to the negative effects of climate changes.
Most experts regard these discussions as the last chance to diminish the negative effects of climatic changes, hoping that even USA and China could offer to reduce the CO2 emissions.
