The Korean forestry office along with the Indonesian Forestry Minister have signed a treaty on Friday, which might be instituded next year.
The treaty stipulates that 200.000 hectares of forest land, from the Kalimantan Island, would be put aside, destined for pellet production.
Through this agreement, Indonesia desires to attract foreign investors and to create new jobs. Thus, South Korea would ensure: administrative support, the construction of facilities needed for pellet manufacture and would assist in daily operations involving the companies active in this programme.
The total amount of fuel can be determined only after the evaluation of the plants located on the island. The programme also includes cutting and planting trees.
Pellets are obtained from compressed and chipped wood,, which is relatively cheap. They are prefered because they don`t release nocive gases into the atmosphere, in compassion to refined products.
Standard cilindric shaped pellets have a smaller heating value than diesel fuels, natural liquid gaz and kerosene, but can ensure heating for a 99m² space, valued at 1.160$/year.
Currently, South Koreas`s pellet consumption is small and limitated to rural communities and hot houses. The country has an operational pellet factory, and 2 more are being built.
