Belarus has joined the European Forest Week, which took place between the 20-24 october 2008, during which 15oo hectares have been afforestated. Along side the forest associations, 9000 volunteers have participated in replanting the forest.
During this week, conferences featuring ecological themes and field trips in protected areas for students, were organised. The entertaiment areas were reabilitated and the improvised garbage wholes were evacuated.
Forests cover 40% of this country’s territory.
This was not the first ecological action in Belarus. In 2007, 35 000 volunteers attended the Forest Day – over 12 000 trees were planted.
In late April 2008, officials decalred the Forest’s Week, which gathered 60 000 participants who planted 30 000 trees.
These actions are aimed at informing the population in regard to pollution, which becomes more agressive as time passes.
